MTF labiaplasty or transgender vaginoplasty holds varying degrees of significance among transgender women; for some, it is an essential step, while others may not find it necessary. As a result, every individual must make choices that align with their particular needs.

    Preparation before MTF Labiaplasty

The medical team will evaluate the suitability of the surgery in each case, considering your health, medical history and options.

Blood tests should be done at least 3 months prior to the surgery. Following a low residue diet is also important. When you visit your doctor, please ask about it.

    What is MTF labiaplasty?

Male to female labiaplasty can be performed during MTF bottom surgery or at a later time, depending on various factors such as the patient’s health and surgeon’s recommendations. It is a surgical technique that reshapes and creates the labia to give a more feminine appearance. This is achieved by using different surgical techniques, including skin graft.

What is MTF labiaplasty surgery like?

This transgender genital surgery involves reducing the size of the labia and creating a more feminine appearance. The procedure may also include clitoral hood reduction and other associated procedures to ensure a natural look.

Is hospital admission necessary for this surgery?

Check in at IM GENDER will be on the surgery day. The operation is generally performed under general anaesthesia and takes around 2-4 hours.

Is there sensitivity after this genital surgery?

The surgery aims to maintain and improve sensitivity where possible. However, results can be different among individuals.

Will I need to stay in the hospital after male to female labiaplasty?

You will need to stay in the hospital for a short period to ensure optimal monitoring of your recovery. This allows our sex reassignment clinic to offer you and your family with a supportive environment for a speedy recovery.

What is the recovery like after this surgery?

It is crucial to follow the postoperative instructions provided by the medical team at IM GENDER. Go to all follow up visits and contact our team if you have any concerns about the recovery process. After being discharged from the hospital, you will be scheduled for postoperative check ups and post-op care appointments. Throughout the postoperative period, an emergency phone number will be available to assist you.

What can I expect as the result of MTF labiaplasty?

In cases where aesthetics has not been satisfied, we perform labiaplasty.
After your complete recovery, you will have labia that looks natural and feminine. While individual experiences may vary, the surgery aims to enhance both aesthetic and functional aspects.

During vaginoplasty, we focus in three aims:

      • Aesthetics
      • Sensitivity
      • Functionality

All three are important and we achieve them in one surgical step.

After the surgery, you can return to a normal diet, ensuring it includes an enough fiber to prevent constipation. If needed, a laxative may be taken.

    Urinary catheter

In case you are discharged with an urinary catheter, it should be used for 4 to 6 days depending on the extent of the surgery and how close it is to the urethra.

During the recovery period, it is advisable to engage in relative rest. Short walks are acceptable, but avoid effort and overloading your legs.

If you have any doubts or concerns after your MTF labiaplasty or vaginoplasty, our medical team is here to provide guidance and support.

You should avoid physical exercise for the first month. After that, your surgeon will tell you how and when to start doing sport.

These visits allow our medical team to monitor your progress, provide personalised post-op care, and address any concerns that may arise.
