MTF BREAST AUGMENTATION BEFORE AND AFTER
Breast augmentation is one of the breast surgeries most often requested by trans women. This technique increases the volume of the breasts in a way that is in harmony with the woman’s bodily proportions, achieving results that are natural.
There are different techniques, the most commonly used being the axillary and areolar routes.
CREATING A FEMININE BREAST
One of the goals of MTF breast augmentation is to create a feminine chest contour. This involves selecting the appropriate breast implant size and shape to achieve a proportional and aesthetically result.
Round implants are often chosen for trans and non binary patients as they provide more fullness at the top of the breast, creating a more traditionally feminine silhouette. Teardrop or anatomical implants, on the other hand, offer a more natural shape that mimics the gradual slope of cisgender female breasts.
TYPES OF IMPLANTS FOR MTF BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast augmentation offers several options for implant placement, depending on the patient’s anatomy and preferences. The three main types of incisions for inserting breast implants are:
- Axillary incision: The implant is placed through an incision in the armpit, hiding the scar in a discreet location.
- Inframammary fold incision: The incision is made under the breast, within the natural fold.
- Areolar incision: The incision is made around the areola’s border or only at its lower edge, blending well with the natural skin tone.
Surgeons consider factors like chest size, skin elasticity and overall goals when recommending the best incision option. Drains are commonly inserted during surgery to minimise swelling and are removed within 48 hours.
FUNCTIONAL AND SENSORY RESULTS
Although MTF breast augmentation focuses on aesthetic outcomes, it’s important to consider how the surgery may impact sensation in the breast area. In some cases, patients may experience temporary changes in nipple sensitivity due to nerve disturbance during the procedure. This is usually a short-term effect, with most patients regaining normal or near-normal sensation within a few months.
Additionally, the implants themselves do not interfere with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), so the breasts may continue to develop and change in response to ongoing oestrogen therapy. This can further enhance the overall look and feel of the augmented breasts over time.
RECOVERY AFTER MTF BREAST AUGMENTATION
Recovery from MTF breast augmentation usually takes several weeks, with most patients resuming daily activities within one or two weeks. In the initial post-operative period, swelling, bruising and mild discomfort are common, but these symptoms typically disappear within a few days. Wearing a supportive bra without underwire during the recovery phase can help minimise swelling and support healing.
Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise or any activities that might strain the chest muscles for at least six weeks. The full results of the surgery will become more apparent as the swelling decreases and the implants settle into their final position.
POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
As with any surgical procedure, male to female breast augmentation carries some risks. The most common complications are:
- Scars from surgery on the chest or circles around the areolas.
- Hematomas and seromas under the skin.
- Infection that may require treatment with oral antibiotics.
- Loss of nipple sensation.
- Irregular contours.
- Capsular contracture.
- Anaesthesia reaction.
While these complications are relatively rare, it’s important to discuss potential risks with your surgeon before undergoing surgery. Most issues can be corrected with additional procedures or medical treatment if necessary. A 24 hour phone line will be available for you to make your inquiries.
PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF MTF BREAST AUGMENTATION
Beyond the physical changes, MTF breast augmentation can have a psychological impact. Many trans women report increased self-esteem and body confidence following the procedure, as it helps reduce gender dysphoria related to their chest appearance. The alignment of one’s body with their gender identity can lead to a greater sense of personal satisfaction and emotional well-being.
The psychological benefits are often closely linked to the aesthetic outcomes. Feeling more comfortable in clothing, enjoying social interactions and experiencing a stronger connection to one’s gender identity all contribute to an enhanced quality of life.
However, it’s important to have realistic expectations and prepare for the emotional adjustment period following surgery. While many patients feel immediate relief and satisfaction, some may need time to adapt to the changes in their body. Open communication with your surgeon can provide assistance during this transition period.
