How to choose your medical team?
Choose a medical team you can trust
Make sure the medical team performing your procedure is qualified in Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, or General Surgery, and holds the corresponding certification. In other words, they must have obtained their specialty through the MIR program—a mandatory requirement to practice a specialty in Spain—and completed their training in renowned hospitals.
A constantly learning medical professional
A well-prepared doctor must be devoted to continuous learning, eager to stay updated, and open to acquiring or implementing new techniques that demonstrate clear advantages over traditional ones. At IM GENDER, we stay at the forefront of all scientific and medical innovation.
Demand clear information
During pre-surgical consultations, the surgeon should clearly explain the procedure to be performed, the reasons for choosing a specific surgical technique, and the risks that may occur during and after surgery. It is important to communicate your expectations so the doctor can address any doubts regarding the achievable postoperative results.
Experts in genital reconstruction and gender-affirming surgery
In addition, the surgeon must be specialized in genital reconstruction and reassignment techniques and have certificates proving their attendance at courses taught by surgeons who are experts in the field.
A specialized multidisciplinary team
Collaboration with other healthcare professionals who contribute to improving the quality of life of patients is essential. This ensures you receive proper guidance. It is also important to consider personal history, experiences, hormone therapy, and the presence or absence of family support. This way, a comprehensive bio-psycho-social approach can be provided for trans individuals.
A Team that supports you
Different surgeries – especially gender-affirming ones – require continuous follow-up for at least one year by the medical team that performed the procedure. This ensures that any unforeseen issues arising during recovery can be addressed promptly and safely. Otherwise, your health could be at risk.
